I've found that this tool is great for welding caps into the ends round or square pipe.

You first cut out a piece of metal that just fits inside the pipe, then place one flat edge of the magnet down the center of this piece, so the ends of the magnet stick out beyond the edges.

Sit the magnet down on the end of the pipe, and your cut-out piece will be held perfectly flat with the end of the pipe. Tack weld at three or four points, remove the magnet, and weld the seam.

Since the piece is nice and flush with the end of your pipe, clean-up grinding is a snap.
