Whenever you want to test out any ideas for forged ironwork then try using some plastilina which you can get at any art store. Modeling wax is also another alternative as well. This clay/wax approach can be extended to Damascus or Mokume as well. One of the local Damascus makers gets clay of different colours, and lays it up, draws it out, folds it, cuts it, inverts it, and then takes a knife and slices where he would cut and or grind to see what the pattern is doing.
