The thinnest you can cast is about 1/8" for small castings.

Pour at about 1350, don't exceed 1400 unless you've got a method for degassing. Using old aluminum wheels is fine. they will work better if you melt andpour into ingot molds first-then melt the ingots for your casting. they will be less porous this way as the first melt (into ingots) burns out alot of the impurities.
