If you've ever worked on a car with an aluminum head, you may have noticed how the motor oil bakes onto the surface, and gives a rich chocolate brown color.

When I was a freshman I mentioned this to my sculpture instructor, who said he has heard of coloring aluminum with motor oil before, though he didn't remember the details. I keep meaning to experiment with this, though I've not yet gotten around to doing it.

I have no idea how durable this finish would be. The aluminum head in question (from a 1987 Honda Civic) was taken to a machine shop for repairs, where it was chemically cleaned -- putting an end to my plans to attack the coloration (on the outside) in various ways in order to test its durability.

No matter what its intrinsic durability is, I imagine that paste wax would do a lot to preserve the finish in a normal environment.
