Jesse,

You should go ahead and fire the shell so that it goes through quartz inversion and then can be stored. Once the shell has been stored for a long period of time and when it it going to be cast, the shell can be vacuumed or even washed out with water to clean any dust or foreign material that accumulated from storage. Then the shell can be reheated as it is prepaired for receiving the iron or whatever metal.
