seems that the ratio of fuel to iron is, in a properly running cupola, 9 to 1, that is 9 pounds of iron to one pound of coke.

Bronze is 20 to 1. These things are suprisingly efficient.

The result of an improperly operated cupola is an oxidised melt, not smoke. I cant see where the smoke could come from, except perhaps from the initial wood fire used to get it all started. Coke is a clean burning fuel.
