Jack! Have you solved your problems yet? The shell temps sound fine...Always feed the heavy sections first and even with shell, you should try extra gating and vent off of the thinner sections. I alway super-heat to about 2250f to allow for pouring off from the furnace to the crucible and then to the shell (pouring at about 1950f). Let the shells air cool. When I first started casting years ago I would cool the castings by hosing them with water. I learned after years of casting to let the shell spall by itself before breaking the shell away from the casting.
