I am a potter who uses a Raku firing technique who would like a quick recipe on how to make a ceramic shell (refractory slip) slurry which I will then use on the pots. Does anyone have any suggestions. My objective is to have a thin shell that is applied directly to bisqued pots. The pots are then brought up to 1900 F and removed from the kiln. They are then placed in a reduction chamber. I want the ceramic shell to crack profusely, therby imparting a crackle type appearance on the surface of the pot from carbon depositon. This technique has been used frquently in the past ten years or so. I've seen the results on a number of different pieces, one of which I own, yet I haven't been able to get specific information on a specific formula for the shell slurry mix.
