Is there a veterinarian in the house?

longhornlonghornkey1key1key2key2Spent most of today trying to regain the knack of making "longhorn" heads. That pesky website of mine's encouraged a customer to order a corkscrew, and I haven't made one of these for ages! I'm glad there's still some pretty good instructions on Anvilfire's "iforge" The Bill Epps demo on there is where I first discovered how to do animal heads. Not too pleased with todays results...don't get me wrong- many of my best friends are a little wonky and misshapen but I'm not sure that I've got a steer I'm happy to send out yet. And I just realised I've put a reverse thread on the corkscrews...just to add that extra little uniqueness! Yesterday made a spare church door key in the morning.Another job that rarely turns out profitable but feels pretty satisfying (not supposed to be an exact replica, by the way. They just want it to open the door and not cost too much!)

Nice job on the key, Will.

Nice job on the key, Will. The longhorn corkscrews aren't bad, either, if you discount the left-handedness and the fact that the horns look more like water buffalo. Just kidding you! They look fine and they should command a premium price since no one else is making corkscrews for southpaws. (grin)

Longhorn cattle have horns that are pretty singular as you can see in this photo I found on the 'net. longhornlonghorn

I'll bet they have a tough time going through doorways.  Tongue out

For a pretty good look at forging animals, check out a little book called "The Iron Menagerie."  You can probably find a copy at one of the used book emporiums or maybe a purveyor of blacksmithing books online.
