Best ear protection ??

Hello all,

I've got a splitting headache that's pretty much halted production this afternoon. Reckon it's partly due to an intensely frustrating conversation with a client earlier (VERY fussy, but can't tell me what she wants, only that every sample/drawing I do for her isn't quite it!)

But mostly down to a morning at the power hammer. I normally wear disposable foam ear plugs, but they don't quite seem to be cutting it.
I prefer them to phones, as I don't like the big lumps hanging off my head, and the (admittedly cheap) phones I do have tend to press the arms of my glasses into my temples and, well......,give me a headache!

But I'm now thinking I owe my ears a break - wondering whether to go for top quality plugs, electronic phones, or high quality standard phones.
I know a few people use a combination of both plugs and phones...but there's always the dilemma of wanting to hear a customer or delivery at the door when not actually hammering, not to mention having time to remove all the protective gear in time to pick up the phone before the answer machine. (Yeah, I don't worry too much about that if I've actually got hot metal in my hand, but you never know what you might miss!)

I'm going to be doing much more forging, power hammer work than usual between now and Christmas, an I wanna be sure to hear those sleigh bells, so what do you recommend ?

Will, One of my friends,

Will,

One of my friends, Mark Aspery, highly recommends the use of custom-fitted suppressors sold by hearing specialists. The ones he has and uses are the Emtech ER-20 - they boast a 25 db filter level and still allow you to hear conversation when there is no high level noise present.

I have the same issues you do with the earphones mashing the temples of my glasses, so I'm currently using 23 db foam plugs. When really screwed down tightly into my ear canals they work fine, but they're annoying to remove to carry on a conversation. I suppose one of these days I'll take Mark's advice and get the fitted ones, but I have to first drop the big bucks for the properly fitted hearing aids - I should have started wearing hearing protection many years ago but did not and now I'm more than half deaf. Something to think about.

Will, Check out your local

Will, Check out your local ARCO, like Rich, my hearing is now suffering from refusing to wear protection for years. I tried plugs for a while but found them too invasive, so I have gone back to phones. ARCO carry a good range of all types of protection. There must be one near MK.
My son bought me a pair of BOSE noise cancelling phones for my Ipod, they are brilliant but expensive. If there was something similar for the workshop only cheaper I would consider them.

Thanks..not familiar with

Thanks..not familiar with Arco - I'll have a look.
Meanwhile have ordered some peltor optime 3 ear muffs which seem to offer about the highest decibel reduction....
There are a lot of noise cancelling ones on ebay for £15 - £30...but I'm guessing at that price they can't be great !
The fancier ones aeem to start at £80.00 which is getting pricey to chuck around in the workshop....
