Electrostatic painting??

Anyone know much about this? I never heard of it till recently. A well known D.I.Y. paint manufacturer here in the U.K. has just started selling an electrostatic painting system. They claim you can paint round or square bars on a railingfrom one side only! The gun takes little batteries and you hook up an earth lead to the work. Apparently the paint particles are then electrostatically attracted to the metal. The gun's only around £40.00 - but it only accepts special aerosols of their paint, which are very expensive.( and in i.m.h.o. their paint isn't nearly as good as they claim ) I guess my question is, if this principle works as they say, is there an affordable way of applying it by modifying one's existing gear and using paint you know and trust? Could I cannibalize their gun to make my paint spray through the electrostatic field it generates ? Does anyone know if using this system helps coverage on nasty blacksmithy features like cages(baskets) and the like? I'm intrigued! (IRON)WILL |

Electrostatic painting
Will, it's been around for years. About 20 years ago, we were told to leave at 5 pm because the desks were being painted. We didn't have to clean the desks or empty them out.
The painters attached a wire via a clip to the desk and sprayed. No overspray ON ANYTHING! The next morning we had newly painted desks. The paint even went in between the drawers and painted the top, sides, and bottom of the drawer front.
I don't know if it was a special paint. There was very little odor and it was very hard so I assumed it was some type of lacquer but I don't know.
