ArtMetal Available in Different Languages

OT: Sandbox YAK

Since we have been getting new members from various countries other than English speaking countries, we now have a new series of links at the top right hand column of every page which gives the user the opportunity to use Google's translation services on the artmetal.com web site. Try it and see if you like it. I hope it will help expand our community of metal artists.

Interesting,These

Interesting,

These translators may be getting better but they often give
"tenses" that leave one tense, insulted, confused. and sometimes more of a puzzle than one started out with.

Enrique, and Rocio. When you look at a google translated page in Spanish, how do you rate it per the original?

Maybe I should set up a two column table of text we could pick at. I see that the google version has buttons for people to suggest corrections.

Wiki?

Gene, the Spanish

Gene, the Spanish translation is actually fairly accurate. Of course, it's never perfect, but folks who have a hard time reading English, or can't even read it, will enjoy the translation.

The only problem I see is when they start posting in different languages. Then, we English speaking folks will have to use the translation service. Thing is, I haven't added English to the list. I guess we are just going to have to see how it works.

Anyway, I've had a couple of requests from my Spanish speaking friends to add this capability to the artmetal.com web site. So, here it is.

I do try to keep ArtMetal up

I do try to keep ArtMetal up to date with some of the latest technologies. I wish I could dedicate myself to it full time, but I can't afford to do it at this time. Maybe as time goes on I'll figure out a way to make a living from providing this service to the metal arts community.

At this time, my bread and butter still come from making functional art. But I do love to meddle into multimedia. I hope to have the third episode of the Marsi Chandelier available next week. It's been awhile since I finished the chandelier, and I just started last week to put together the videocast.

Hi Quique: that`s an excellent initiative for people around the world that can`t understand english. And for all of us here in ARTMETAL, it`s a window out to show our work and see theirs: global sharing, that`s great! Speaking of new features on this site, I was wondering Quique, if it`s posible to delete a given post, of course I`m talking about one`s own ? Thanks. Nelson

webminster's picture

You can delete your own

You can delete your own posts by going to it and editing it, then there should be a "delete" button. You should also be able to delete a comment you've written up until someone else adds a comment. Then you can't delete it anymore.

Have you tried using the Spanish translation tool yet? If so, what do you think of the translation?

I find web translations are

I find web translations are really weak when it comes to technical terms, though.
Even things as simple as "anvil".
In spanish, its usually "junque" or "yunque", but sometimes in some countries there are oddball local versions of technical words, which really throw off the translation software.
In argentina, they sometimes call anvils "begornias" which I have never gotten the software to even recognize.

Things like bandsaw, or milling machine, or ironworker really throw it for a loop too.

webminster's picture

Yea well I just tried the

Yea well I just tried the translation of your anvil statement and here's the result:

Incluso cosas tan simples como "yunque".

So it seems to work well with anvil anyway. I know that the translations have gotten better of the years. It's not easy to have an automated computer translation get everything right. But it's better than nothing.

I followed the links back to

I followed the links back to the Google translation project home page. This whole thing is running off a self programing artificial intelligence program. Instead of giving it rules about words it was fed pairs of associated words and allowed to make up it's own rules. This has been going on for some time as it took a while for the program to start coming up with good translations. If you hover over any word in the translation an edit box pops up to let you suggest a better word for this particular context. I guess that kind of makes it a wiki project.
