When is it "Fast Enough"?

OT: Sandbox YAK

Well, I've heard from a couple of you that the new cms for artmetal is a bit slow. And I have to concur. So I spent the last day seeing what I can do to optimize this site. I'm happy to report that I have been able to get a performance boost by tweaking the mysql configuration file. Basically, I've added more memory to the mysql server so that it responds faster to the queries from the database. Now, my question is, when is fast, fast enough? If you are not logged in, then pages delivered to you are cached for an hour, so you should see a marked improvement in download speed. Folks that are logged in do not get any cached pages. Which means that data is being retrieved from the mysql database. I would like to hear from you. What is your experience of moving through the ArtMetal site? Do I need to continue to look at optimization techniques? Or is the site so slow that I should move artmetal to a newer/faster web server and give up on this 386 processor?

Re: When is it fast enough?

Nothin's never fast enough! That thought aside, I feel that for much browsing, it still moves a bit slow. On my computer, I am finding about a 10 second lapse between pages. Fine if I am just going to go to one page, but to spend lots of time here, I do not know if I will feel patient enough. Something like 5 or 6 seconds might be good enough? I do not know. I have been looking around and while perusing other sites, the pages come up in about 1-4 seconds on my computer. Just my twelve cents...

Getting Faster

Well, since I'm still working on speeding up this cms, I have made another upgrade to the php portion of this server. I added eaccelerator and have noticed a definite speed in loading pages. Seems eaccelerator compresses the most used functions so that they don't have to be processed each and every time.

So, are you noticing a speed increase yet? Or is it still taking 10 seconds to display a page?

That made a huge difference.

That made a huge difference. It is taking about 3 seconds or less to move from page to page. And that is about as fast as my computer gets. Any faster would have to be tested by someone else. Yeah, big difference...

You make me so happy!

You don't know how happy this makes me feel! Yahoo! I was really starting to get worried that I had spent the last four months setting this social networking site up for nothing. I thought that I was going to have to either give up or move artmetal to a faster paid service. Not that I don't mind paying a little, mind you. It's having to give up a complete server that is pretty much dedicated to ArtMetal.

Well, now that things are going smother, maybe it's time to bring in the sandbox crowd. What do you think? Have you run into any other snafu's?
