Just another bird

| | |

I made this bird a few weeks back and finally got a chance to take some pictures. Not the best pictures, but at least I have some of it now. My attempt at a Great Blue Heron.
Made from 32 ounce copper, weighs about 55 pounds, wingspan is 60 inches and 39 inches to the top of the head. Base is temporarily for now.leftfront viewleftfront viewrightback viewrightback view

Great Job! If you can find a a piece of Blue Ice granite it would give the effect of water. Clear resin with a fish would be cool.

I think just being near a water feature would be great!

Hi Warren, The only herons

Hi Warren,

The only herons that could compete with yours would be real ones. Refined details... magnificent work! Do you cut metal strips and then shape them, or do you plasma cut them? Are the legs solid copper? Sorry if I`m saking to much. Nelson.

Thanks

Thanks for all of the very nice compliments.

The feathers were all individually hand cut. The little ones I would make a strip about 10 inches long and cut to almost through, this allowed me to hold on to them so I could hammer them over my die I made. I did use my stomp shear to cut some the larger feathers, but still did some hand cutting.
There is steel rod structure inside the body and steel rods out to help support the wings during the build and in case they get covered in snow and ice. In the legs, also steel rods then copper sheet fabricated for the outside. The body is made up from feathers.

Wow Warren, that is really beautiful. The pose is very lifelike and the feathers are wonderful. I guess I need to try for more than just legs now. What are you going to do with it, was it for someone? How tall is it?
