Raising

Just wanted to show a couple of pix.

The first picture is the of a bunch of copper vases I've been working on for Christmas presents for family and friends. Most are 9 inches tall with a couple smaller ones and one larger one.

Below is a pic of a couple of copper pipe vases I'm working on for Christmas presents. One started with 8" section of copper pipe and the other started as 10" section of pipe and ended up being 7" tall and the other 9" tall. Started with 2" type L copper pipe.

Hello all,

Just wanted to post a couple pix of the pipe vase I have in progress. Just wanted to show the progress. Below is what it looks like so far. Also below is a pic of the stake used to create the pipe vase.

chasing tool holder

Repousse & Chasing | |

After seeing some vases made from copper pipe, I acquired a bunch of scrap 2" Type L copper pipe at the scrap yard. I figured I'd start making some chasing tool holders for myself. To do this, I made a mandrel to do some chasing and hammer texture on the pipe. I guess these could also be pen/pencil holders for someone's desk also. To make the mandrel, I used 1 1/2 ID black iron pipe. It's outside diameter is just under 2 inches so the copper pipe slides right over it. I then welded some 2" construction washers on the ended, ground it smooth and pushed a rod through the holes. I then welded some heave angle iron onto a plate and made cutouts on top so the rod would rest in it and be able to easily rotate. I can now slide the copper pipe on the mandrel and chase and texture the outside of the pipe. Here are some pix:

various chasing and repousse methods

Repousse & Chasing | |

I'd like to kick off some discussion about the various methods of chasing/repousse. I've read about there being different methods and heard various styles mentioned, but never have had anyone explain the differences. Names I hear are Eastern style, Western style, Japanese style. The simplified description of the way I've been learning is:

newest repousse - tomatoes

Repousse & Chasing |

Ok, here's the piece of chasing/repousse I'm working on right now.....a tomato vine. The story behind the tomatoes is that I live in a small town (Crystal Springs, MS) that was once known as Tomapolis (Tomato Capital of the World). At one point, this little town was growing and shipping more tomatoes than any other place in the world. Or so I'm told. Funny, huh?

Intro and some chasing/repousse

| |

I'm new to ArtMetal so I thought I'd kick off with a little introduction. My "real" job is computer networking but I've had a passion for the metal arts for the past couple of years. A trip to Williamsburg, VA a couple of years ago got me turned on to blacksmithing and just recently I've become really interested in doing copper work including raising vessels and chasing/repousse. Look forward to interacting with everyone here and hope to learn alot. Here's a picture of a little chasing/repousse that I did recently.
