Metal Books Exhibition

Alex's posted image Welded Book and the replies to it sparked an interest in having an online exhibition.

Let's roll this idea around. Metal books as a theme? And have this be an inaugural event for possible ongoing theme shows. Touch stone inspiration, deadline.

I think it is a neat diversion from our everyday. And would help to create/initiate another community event.

I'd like to roll around a few ideas here first and the make a chat event posted on this new calendar so that the initial ideas can be shared and discussed in conversation format.

This won't necessarily be "my baby" unless it seems to need a driver coordinator at this point. Would like to facilitate us getting started. Your ideas and input please.

As we need technical input, we can share with webminster and see how to build it. -Valerie Rock

I'm in! I'll do what I can

I'll do what I can to facilitate the technical aspects of making the exhibition online work. But first comes the brainstorming... the how's, whys, and what ifs... So I'll be listening for awhile.

Artist Metal Books

I love artists books as much as I like regular books. So, I'll admit that I was a bookworm as a child. Books have always been so comfortable. Metal books are a lot more substantial, but permanent.

In college, I took a couple artist book classes. I never would have considered making one out of metal back then. I made a book that was 4' x4' out of plywood with a 48" piano hinge so that you could turn the pages. Back when you could enlarge up to 800% on a mac, I printed out definitions of the words "open" and "close" and shellacked them onto those 4' pages.

Very obscure, but the point was to open the book, then close the book - how else can you see what's inside?

I taught a sculpture class a while ago and a had a student who seemed unable to progres on his first idea for a project but was able to create an object he was more comfortable with: a copper book with his poetry in it.
