solstice

|

Just found out we cannot install on 20th due to planning, not sure of revised date yet. No bad thing as due to high winds recently, a poor aerodynamic design, and much concern we got a structural engineer to go over it. Bit of triangulation needed in the legs. Andy looks hilarious keep popping up through his waist. Working off a platform to shape head and neck took about 3 times longer, working at height is so frustrating. Really exciting news, I have been put in contact with the Stonehende druid order, who really like the sculpture. He calls him the ancestor and will be blessing him in full ceremony. Working hard but exciting times.

Full Circle

Hi Michelle and Andy,
Getting a structural engineer to assist was a wise decision indeed considering the scale of your sculpture.

Solstice is an awesome work. Hopefully it will inspire mankind to reconsider not only the effects the environment has on himself, but the effects he has on the environment.
I think it will as this image of a man brings the focus full circle.
Peace,eh

Glad to hear Solstice is

Glad to hear Solstice is coming along. Figuring out how to keep these big things standing under all of the stresses that mother nature can dish out can be frustrating. I'm surprised on every project just how stout the engineer wants the structure. I'd be a very happy man if I could never hear the term "1/2 inch radial ice" again. That one has wrecked many slim elegant designs on the drawing board, lol. I'll have to admit though, whenever I enlist the engineer, those sculptures don't move an inch.

thankyou

Thankyou for your kind words, I think were in the 'zone' at the moment. Its going really well. Andy is much happier now that were confident he will stand up. It was when he started going on about turbulence and wind forces, twisting and shearing! Apparently he is going to react like a big sail, the holes in the patchwork skin will allow air in but not out causing turbulence to build up inside! Who knew?. Glad we made him first though, the suggestion was to lower his bottom onto his knees to anchor through his feet, but that would not represent 'the moment' we were after. Your knees definately hit the ground first when you collapse onto them, Ive tried it.
Will keep you posted

Michelle and Andy

Yes pictures in sculpture gallery

You can also view our facebook page for more pictures, cant post a link effectively but it comes up if you google search public sculpture amesbury. Speaking to the Stonehenge druids today, he has suggested that we install him at the stones in line with the heel stone for Solstice this year. 40,000 people and the world media. Cant quite believe it, meeting next week to try and make this happen. Beats the local councillor and a few canopes!

Congratulations on that

Congratulations on that happening, A&M! I hope it brings you a lot more really fun and challenging work. This piece is terrific, if I haven't said so already.
