oxy fuel welding set up

Welding

Hello,
I'm new here and would like some help choosing an oxyfuel set up for welding mild steel rod armatures together. I'm thinking of this:

Is this a good set up for what I'd like to do?

thanks

Oxyfuel set

The outfit you propose to consider is specially made to be portable (for refrigeration and air conditioning): you could even hang it on your shoulders to work with it anywhere. If you have no need to work on a ladder, regular gas cylinders would probably cost you less.

Did you consider arc welding (Shielded Metal Arc Welding - SMAW or stick) with a simple transformer (power source)?

Thank you for the response.

Thank you for the response. I doubt if I'll be on a ladder!

Yes, I have considered arc welding, I'm actually signed up for a spring course that includes both oxyfuel and arc welding. I may end up with a stick welding machine at some point, but I like the idea of the versatility of oxyfuel.

Oxy-acetylene

You can't go wrong having an oxy-acetylene setup, if only to heat things and bend them. I also use mine to braze.

I don't use my OA setup often, because I have stick, TIG, and MIG in my shop, and generally prefer to weld TIG.

I would pass on the tiny bottles, unless you need the portability. Small bottles will cost you more in refills, so cost more in the long run.

Your local welding shop may have sales on OA setups. I started with the 40cu ft size bottles (bigger than what you were looking at) and have upgraded to bottles around 80 cuft.

Have fun,

Oxy fuel setup

Many years ago (wont tell you how many......) I went to a farm equipment show in Tulare California and got a GREAT DEAN on a Victor setup. If you can find some sort of Equipment show or see if your local welding shop is going to have dome sort of demo going on in the near future, you might be able to get a good deal on a setup. E Bay or Craigs List might be something to look at too. Also garage sales. You can have the regulators rebuilt if the cost of the used equipment is low enough. Also check out the equipment on the net. I have an Oxy Act setup, a stick machine and a TIG unit. I use the TIG about99% of the time but the other 2 units get used when the situation necessitates. Mig has it' place too, and sometimes I wish I had that too, but..............

The bigger bottles for a gas setup are right on. Good hunting and welding.

For simply welding armatures

For simply welding armatures together, I'd probably go with a small MIG unit. The learning curve is shorter, they're way faster and easier to do out-of-position welds with than oxy-fuel. They won't, of course, work for heating, brazing or cutting like an O/A rig will, so that may be a consideration.

If you definitely want an O/A rig, I'd get a decent-sized Victor or Smiths setup with at least 80 cu ft cylinders. Anything less and you spend too much time running back and forth to the gas supplier for refills. If you get a cheapo torch setup, you run the risk of getting something that is quickly orphaned when the supplier goes out of business and you can no longer get parts or service.

If you need to economize, check Ebay or try Indiana Oxygen Company for mail order prices that can't be beat. However, if you have a local supplier that has a decent price, get it there so you can get the support later if you need it.
