"Industrial Tropic"sculpture installed.

This work finally got installed today after it's 10K paint job.The colors change as you walk around the piece and as the light changes. It forms the focal point for Palm Square shopping center on the North side of Santa Rosa,(where I live).At the outset the client told me the piece would be painted and I also was restricted to the banana leaf motif,both aspects took me far outside my "comfort zone". However I was not required to install the piece nor oversee the paint aspect,and all permits,fees,and ordinance applications were taken care of by the client.For these reasons I took the job. I was also encouraged the more research I did on the paint.The only time I ever grow is when I'm taken out of my comfort zone so I rolled with it.Under these circumstances it's definitely not the most creative work I've ever done but I'm reasonably happy with the outcome ,as is the client,and in this particular case,I DO think the colors add more interest to the form...
Height 12 feet.
The city of Santa Rosa has a new ordinance that 1% of any new building OR retrofit budget must be spent on art. Thus my long time clients needed to spend money in accordance with the major upgrades for this shopping center that they own.So they came to me.And another side benefit was that the City government arts committee was very familiar with my past public works and put my clients application on the fast track because of it..."Industrial Tropic"sculpture installed."Industrial Tropic"sculpture installed.

new sculpture

Ivan Bailey You are lucky to have the percent for art!The piece is attractive. Georgia manages to ignore the percent requirement, but then , we're not quite so broke as California.

It's beautiful!!

Comfort zone or not...you did an amazing job. I love the coloration. It's unexpected which adds to the uniqueness of the piece. Very dramatic in it's setting!!! SteelyJan

Colorful

Came out really nice with the colors on it, heck with the cost of the paint job it should. Nice piece.

Thanks you guys,
Like Andy(Kay)said,the opinions of other metal workers means the most...
I was pretty stressed on this project right up until the last few days of putting the parts together.I was just unconvinced of it's worthiness even though the client signed off on the sketches.Four or five days from completion I began to see the potential of BEAUTY in it and went about tweaking it to match my visualization.I hate like hell to be controlled in any way when it comes to the creative side of things.And as I stated previously,the client insisted it be the banana leaf theme.I guess I began to channel the Old Man,and hear him say;
"Come on,you're a smart guy,make it work for YOU Stephen.Do whatever it takes to make it beautiful in your own eyes,then you can forget about what the client thinks".
