Banana Leaf Sculpture

|

I just secured this commission over the holidays. It is designed for "Palm Square Sopping Center",so though it is site specific ,my clients knew before hand pretty much what they wanted, so there was little creative input on my part. Sometimes you just have to give people what they want, not necessarily what you think they need...This is one of those times.
Two months to fabricate.
I'll have the leaves plasma cut from 3/16ths mild steel. They will then be "creased" on a 150 ton press brake. After that I'm going to try and roll the leaves to give each just a slight curve(not sure that will work).Banan Leaves SculptureBanan Leaves Sculpture
The contractor will cast the base structure in concrete and is also responsible for the installation and paint(thank goodness).
The plan is to use a new high tech paint that changes colors. Normally I don't paint my steel sculptures but again this is what the clients want, and it may actually be a cool effect ,so I'm at leaST OPEN ...

Hi Stephen and congrats on the commission! Nice to see someone else that still uses pen, pencil, and ink for proposals. I am just starting to invest time and money into computer modeling programs, but will always love the look and feel of hand drawn proposals. I like the design a lot. I'm not a big fan of painting steel either but have had many projects where the client has solid ideas in his or her mind. I'm anxious to see this paint that changes color, be sure to post picts of the effect if you can.
