"Industrial Tropic"sculpture installed.

This work finally got installed today after it's 10K paint job.The colors change as you walk around the piece and as the light changes. It forms the focal point for Palm Square shopping center on the North side of Santa Rosa,(where I live). At the outset the client told me the piece would be painted and I also was restricted to the banana leaf motif, both aspects took me far outside my "comfort zone". However I was not required to install the piece nor oversee the paint aspect, and all permits, fees, and ordinance applications were taken care of by the client. For these reasons I took the job. I was also encouraged the more research I did on the paint. The only time I ever grow is when I'm taken out of my comfort zone so I rolled with it.Under these circumstances it's definitely not the most creative work I've ever done but I'm reasonably happy with the outcome ,as is the client, and in this particular case,I DO think the colors add more interest to the form...

Railing Sample,rectangular tubing

|

This is a sample for a current railing job I'm working on.
Years ago I fantasized that this 1" x 2" rectangular tubing might indeed collapse the way you see in this image ,if brought to heat in the forge and pulled around a scroll jig.My reasoning was based on the assumption that, all things being equal and the heat even throughout, there would still remain some structural integrity at the corners of the tubing that would hold the rectangular cross section while the broad flat faces all collapse in and the edge faces bulge out. This gives a lovely ,almost ORGANIC aesthetic to the scroll which is quite tactile and simply begs to be gripped.

Banana Leaf Sculpture

|

I just secured this commission over the holidays. It is designed for "Palm Square Sopping Center",so though it is site specific ,my clients knew before hand pretty much what they wanted, so there was little creative input on my part. Sometimes you just have to give people what they want, not necessarily what you think they need...This is one of those times.

Nautilus,work in progress

This is a work in progress. My plan is to create an art piece of the living creature, replete with tentacles, mantle, and eyes in welded silicon bronze.
Believe me when I say it's been a challenge to get this far. That is why I've practiced with simpler and smaller shell forms.(Whelk)

Heavy Woven Torque

|

This is an eight strand weave,in stainless wire.
It's a good material for this design because even though the weave itself requires forging (with the acetylene torch)to make it tight, the final shaping of the WHOLE piece can be done by hand cold.

Whelk

I've been visualizing this piece for several years, trying to figure out the best way to make it.
Finally gained the skill to manifest my vision.
This will function for awhile as my model for a much larger piece.

bronze fabricated pine cone

Here's a curious little design problem.
I've been trying to figure out how to make a fairly realistic pine cone by the fabrication process WITHOUT having to make each individual petal by hand.
I finally hit upon the idea of punch parts as my stock repeatable shape. I have access to a marvelous old J.C.Whitney punch and generated a bucket of ovals from a sheet of 3/16th silicon bronze.

need advice about converting a hydraulic hand press to automatic

Hey all,
I've got a 65 ton hand operated frame press which is pretty much useless to me because it's too slow.
I'm exploring ways to get someone local to convert it over to electric.Just now doing the research ...

Some background...

Since I have posted a fair amount of work in the galleries of ArtMetal, but without personal info,I thought it appropriate at this point to provide links to interviews, websites and other galleries to provide some context on my work, history, motivation and process.I ask the indulgence and pardon of all members for dumping so many images at one time.
