torch kit: my little torch kit
another ring: Another try at silver soldering. Been busy and finally got back on line. Appreciate the comments. Heres a picture of my torch kit and also a picture of my newest attempt at another ring. The peace sign part was done with the oxy acet and the shank was attached with a little propane torch. The acetylene torch here is a Gentec. It was about half the cost of a smith little torch and I wasn't sure I would be using the small torch enough to go for the more expensive version. I liked how slow and deliberate everything worked with the propane. But I'm still undecided. I think I like the look of the joints joined with the hotter flame. The ring hasn't been polished yet, just buffed over with a scotchbrite to clean it up. I don't have a pickling bath set up yet and I need to get down some polishing techniques i like. Oh yeah, and the silver solder I'm using is 56%. The stuff they gave me at the welding supply store when I asked for silver solder. I didn't find out till later about the higher percentage solders. I think I read somewhere the solder needs to be at least 65% to still be able to stamp a piece with a 925 stamp. Not that I even have stamps yet. Everything in due time.
The peace sign looks like
The peace sign looks like the tempetature was a bit high on the one arm. I think that 65% is too low to stamp something with a sterling stamp. I still think that acetylene and air is best for silver work.marilyn
