Coal In North Carolina

Blacksmithing

Hi everyone. I'm fairly new to blacksmithing, and am learning as I go. Right now I'm at a point that I'm ready to attempt forge welding. Up to now, I've been using gas or charcoal/wood mix in a forge, mostly for lack of material. The problem is that neither seems to get quite hot enough to raise the steel to welding temp.

My question is: Does anyone know how/where I can locate a coal supplier in North Carolina? Or, failing that, does anyone know of any blacksmithing groups/associations in North Carolina? I would appreciate any help.

Thanks

Thanks very much. I'll give him a ring as soon as I get back in town. Now, the only excuse I'll have for less than perfect work is my own inexperience. I'll just have to fix that.

Thanks

I appreciate the help. I had tried the ABANA site, but had no luck. The nearest suppliers I could find were Tennesee and Virginia. Which is ridiculous, since I know people burn coal in North Carolina, and I'm sure there are blacksmiths all over the state. But, I do appreciate the help.

Hum... I went to the ABANA

Hum... I went to the ABANA site and you're right, it wasn't much help.

Here's the link to the NC blacksmith guild http://www.ncabana.org/

I tried a search of coal on super pages and here's the result.

Hope this helps.

You need coke not coal,

You need coke not coal, beans is best or whatever they call it over your side of the pond, I am sure if the supplier is used to supplying Blacksmiths he will put you right.
Having said that, something must be wrong with your forge set up if you cannot get charcoal up to temperature, charcoal will go hotter and quicker and a lot cleaner than coke and is especially good for fire welding for that reason, leave the wood out and just use charcoal.
