Sharing Knowledge in Peru

5th International Blacksmith Seminar 2007 Peru
I'm heading over to Peru next Saturday and will be giving a seminar which is sponsored by Aceros Arequipa, a steel manufacturer in Lima. I'm really excited about this opportunity to share my metalworking knowledge with the Peruvians.
It's amazing how we truly create our own realities. I've had a desire for over 30 years to visit Machu Picchu. And last year I had a visitor to my web site that put me in touch with Aceors Arequipa. They have recently started an international blacksmithing seminar and after some back and forth communications, the dream has been realized.

I will be training a couple of their personnel for one week prior to the seminar so that they can give the seminar throughout the year. On my second week in Peru I will be giving the seminar for three days to three different groups of metalworkers. The jest of the seminar is to show how to add decorative accents without having to spend a lot of time or money on equipment and materials. Seems that, even though there is a lot of gates, railings, and grillwork in Peru, there is little decorative work being done. Hopefully, this seminar will give the Peruvian metalsmiths some knowledge on how to create decorative ironwork which will enhance the beauty of this beautiful country.

So after fulfilling my obligations, I am heading over to Cuzco and then to Machu Picchu. The little research that I have done has just gotten me all excited about visiting this ancient Inca site. I do know that I am going in the rainy season, but I just hope that I will get a couple of beautiful days which will allow me to experience the magical mysteries of Machu Picchu. I also know that there is going to be a full moon on the Saturday that I arrive at Machu Picchu. My hope is that I will be able to go on top of one of those mountains and absorb the surroundings while howling at the moon! Cool
Wish me luck...

Wow.

That is going to be an amazing experience. My friend Al is on his way over as well, might even be n the same plane. (no return ticket, just staying as long as he stays) He is a singer and guitar player, so you guys could jam!

Have a wonderful trip.

Peru

That trip sounds great to me. I have been to Boliva and Ecuador, but not Peru. I have been to Tiwanaku in Bolivia, but not to any of the Inca sites.

I wish I could go, but I don't think the QuiQui needs a translator. ;-)

Short on time but here's a couple of photos

Lima Peru is full of very kind and beautiful people. I went to the beach area in Miraflores on Sunday with Gerardo and his family. Gorgeous coastline!

We are preparing for the 6th International Blacksmithing Seminar in Lima, Peru. I'm training these guys during this week so that they can give the workshop throughout the country during the rest of the year. We're also having to build 16 forge stations which include post vices, forges, anvils and oxyacetylene outfits. Luckily most of these parts are already made. But one thing we are going to do tomorrow is re-forge ball pean hammers to make them into fullering hammers. Seems the fullering hammer is not a common hammer which can be purchased locally. So the simplest way is to modify the ball end to a fuller so that I can demonstrate the forging of small leaves from 3/8" round.

More to come later. It's late and I have to get up early.
