My Bathroom Remodel Project

OT: Sandbox YAK | | |

Detail of wall tiles and textured paintI just finished a bathroom remodel that has taken over six weeks to finish. This remodel has been on the back burner for over six years and I've finally gotten the time to complete it. It is my upstairs bathroom and I'm tickled pink to not only have completed it, but also on how beautiful it has turned out. I've created a photoset on flickr which shows some of the details which went into the renovation.

Bathroom Remodel - a photoset on Flickr

corner view of tiled bathroom The photo on the right shows the finished corner section for this bathroom remodel project. I'd like to show a photo of the whole bathroom, but I can't because the shape of the bathroom is an "L" shape. So please bare with me while I show some additional before and after photos.

If you want to see the complete documentary, you should visit the photoset on flickr. What I want to do here is to show a couple of my favorite photos and tell you a bit about what we did to do the makeover on the bathroom.

First off, my son Monte and my daughter Mary helped me with this project. Mary is studying interior design at Meredith College so between the two of us, we came up with the color scheme and tile selection.

Section view of bathroomHere's an antique baby claw foot bath tub along with the armoire, my own night light and wall sconce, and a partial view of the mirrors and vanity. One of the nice things about the bath tub is that it sits right under a large horizontal window with a beautiful view of the North Carolina Piedmont country woods.

Speaking of lighting... I thought I would add a detail of the fractal image I created which is part of the natural stone mica for the custom sconces I made for the bathroom. One of the things I loved about these sconces is that when the mica is backlit, it matches the color of the marble on the walls.

I make a series of wall sconces which use various fractal patterns and other images which I have taken in the past. If you're interested in acquiring one of my sconces, let me know and I'll add the images to my web site. You can also see my PICT-O-NIGHTS nightlights by going to this web site.

Bathroom Ceiling

To give you a better view of what this bathroom really looks like, let me show you a photo looking up to the cieling. The ceiling is made of tung and groove pine and is about 18 feet high to the peak. This is a great photo showing all the various textures and colors that have gone into making my dream bathroom.

So now that this project is over, it's time for me to get back to working on my metalwork projects. I've started a design for a vanity base which will be made from forged bronze. But this next commission is for another blog post in the not too distant future.

Bathroom Re-Do

Wow - That sure out-does the bathroom re-do I did a year and a half ago. I have a feel for what you went through to accomplish that, and all I can say is Wow!

How did you get that pattern of bubbles (or what ever it is - but it looks like bubbles to me) on the mica?

It's a trade secret

Rick,

I can't tell you the complete process because I consider it a trade secret. However, I will tell you that I designed the image using fractal software and embedded it onto the mica.

I kinda wish I could say more, but I put a lot of time into figuring out how to get images onto mica so that they last for 100+ years. These shades are heirloom quality sconces and there is no one that I know of that is making them but me.

Thanks for your interest though, and you do know that I am open with lots of my metalworking techniques. Just not this one ;-)
