cross roads

Well, this is the week Larry gets laid off from his job. The company he works for has been hard hit from the economic crisis. They make oriented strand board (OSB) and no one seems to be buying. The company is loosing money and they have been having a difficult time getting pulp in...
Larry is actually excited about it...

I'm sure we will be fine....we don't owe much, so that helps a lot...We are going to use this time to knock on doors and try and drum up LOTS of business....why not? guess if things get tight, i'll go get a real job...life is good, and we find ourselves at a cross road....should be interesting

Thanks Smoky
This will free Larry up and be able to help me in the shop. He is so much better talking with people than i am, so he will make a great salesman. It's just a matter of figuring out which way we want to go.

Hi Paula, I wish you and

Hi Paula, I wish you and Larry the best. You seem to have a great attitude for the situation, which should make all of the difference. Opportunity vs hardship, many people would have thought the latter and wallowed. I'm glad to hear your both taking advantage of the opportunity.

Hi Paula, I had tried

Hi Paula,
I had tried posting a comment and internet didn`t allow me. Incidentally, it started: " I`m sorry Paula...bla,bla,bla" Good thing didn`t go through! No, I`m not sorry for I believe it should all be for better. Difficulties down the road are great oportunities for growth and change. This global crisis is an invitation to change, to take new roads,or may be old ones. In any case, it`ll mean big challenges for those of us willing to take on. Best wishes to you, and to all of us... Nelson.

I'm in total agreement with

I'm in total agreement with you Nelson. I'm a believer in, 'everything happens for a reason'. This 'crisis' didn't just happen over night, so, it will take sometime to pull out of it. BUT, as the old saying goes, 'and this to shall pass'. The birds still sing, the wind still blows, the sun still shines. We do our best to make right decisions for our lives. Where one door closes one door opens...and yes, i really do believe that
Thanks Nelson........

We are all with you....

Hi Paula,
Good luck and keep that attitude and something will come up for you. Maybe this is your big open door to a new lifestyle. Working together....new venues for your creativity.
I am wishing you both all the best. SteelyJan

I think it is a 'big open

I think it is a 'big open door'. Walking through doors always takes an adjustment on our part, taking a step. Sometimes someone has to push you through the door, but either way, you walk through it....;)

some news.....yesterday Larry came home to inform me that they are retaining some millwrights on a part time bases to dismantle one of the lines, Larry is one of those being kept...part time...of course everything in life is subject to change, and i'm sure this is no different..time will tell.

Thanks Steely

An Adventure

Paula,
I know exactly how you and Larry are doing some deep thinking. I got told last week too that at the end of month no more day job. Yipppeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!! For so many years I was always looking for the right opportunity to get out of the rut. My wife is a little bit optimistic about it all but she is willing to let me try being an artist full time.
So may the new adventure begin.

Marketing in a tough economy

Hi Paula,

As most people have wished you well I do also. If I can offer anything of assistance when it comes to marketing (especially in tough economic conditions) many times businesses try to sell what they have instead of going to market and seeing what the consumers are looking for.

I too have been knocking on doors and what I have been doing recently (and am continuing to do) is find out what local retailers are looking for based on their customers requests and creating unique items to fit within those categories. The response I have been getting here in Canada is that they are looking for items like wine racks, CD racks, candle holders, etc.

I do hope that helps in some way.

Appreciate the suggestions....I've been somewhat successful selling candle holders, but have yet to make wine racks or CD racks....will have to see what i can come up with.

Paula,It seems like so many

Paula,
It seems like so many of us are in the same boat! I have been selling my work at a local farmers market for a few months now and it's been great. It doesn't cost much at all so I can price my work low enough to sell quickly and everyone wins. It's also a great way to get commissions. Getting up at 4:45 a.m. every Sat. is another story although I'm getting used to it (!). I wish you the best....

Thanks Kimberli,
