Billy Jean in Steel

Well, She is almost done so I just had to make a post. I have been working on this piece for quite a while actually. It is my first real art welding project, and I just started powder coating about 3 weeks ago. The materials are piano wire, steel bar, and I think it was 22g steel sheet for the back. I powder coated the pieces and will be doing a coat of high gloss over the whole thing so she will shine a bit more. The blue of her face/body will be much more blue once the clear coat is on it, but the rest of the colors should stay the same.

When I started this project, the focus was on the wire and not really the background, but now that it is done, the background seems to be bare...I may add some stuff to the yellow parts of her body still before I coat it. That always seems to be my worst problem is actually being done with something!

Nice job!

Maybe you can add some color with the lighting - I like the way the shadows work on the background.

Very cool, Nola! If you add to the background are you going to distract from the wire? I would live with it awhile before I added much to it. Lin

OK see that is why these forums are great :)

The shadows of the wires was one of the super important things when I pictured the image in my head. It was just when it as done that I decided maybe it was looking 'empty'. A friend told me yesterday it didn't need anything else...and you two are saying the same thing, and I really wanted to think it is done too so I think it is official hehe I want the focus to be the wire for sure not the background.

I definitely need some practice on the powder coating, but I do like the results. The blue in the wire of her face will be much brighter once the clear is on it. I got a cheep gun to start out with ($200) and it is obvious why people pay $2000 for the good guns, but with a little practice I think this gun will do OK.

Time to start working on my next one I think. I have an image already done of the Obama first dance that I think I might start on next. I also think I want to bring the faces out in 3d so it would be like a slice on the wall, but be maybe like half a head deep instead of just an inch like this one is. I also think I am going to add some glass to the next one because that would trow really nice colors onto the backgrounds to fill the look out some.

Well I either trashed the background completely...or I came up with a really cool finish hehehe

For some reason, when I clear coated it, the yellow turned a streaky orange. I showed it to a couple people tonight for the first time and they freaked out on it so now I don't know what to do at all! I think it is done :)
