hey Donna

thanx for the input i recently got to work on my casting and im going to make a silver o-link chain soon, and after that a silver plain band ring. After all the excitement when i finally got to start i found a whole new world and i love doing this even though its alot of hard work. What exactly do yu do and where in our great big world are you situated? oh and thanx for the wax tip i want to start experimenting cause ill only be able to do that in about another two years but i have a gut feeling im going to be rather god at it. hehehe.

I would recommend that you

I would recommend that you purchase copies of "Metal Techniques for Craftsmen" by Oppi Untracht and "Silversmithing" by Rupert Finegold and study them endlessly. Those tow books have a wealth of information and are terrific reference works that you will use throughout your career, believe me. My copies are just about worn out after forty years of use. I have hundreds of othe rbooks, but those two are the ones I go to first and most often.

Learn to make your own tools. Take a couple of classes in blacksmithing so you can really learn forging and then you can make your own repousse' and chasing punches, hammers, chisels, gravers, etc. The thousands of dollars you can save by making your own is one b enefit, the other is that you will develop a feel for working metal in ways that you can't quite get by working cold. Besides, it's great fun!

Best of luck with it all!

Hello Rich Waugh

Thanx a millionn!! that was a mouthfull but i must say i have heard of oppi untracht's book and i love the idea of making my own tools although im not exactly sure about where id go for blacksmithing lessons?? the only huge metalwork ive learned was when my dad taught me how to CO2-weld, which i found a great deal of fun. i helped him or rather am still helping him with a long term project he's gotten up to. but all in all its great fun.
Thanx for the advice apreciate it alot. Enjoy and hope to converse again soon.
