Gas saver

Hey, does anyone have/use a gas saver for their torch. Do you like it? Where do you get one, I can't find it on the internet anywhere.

Hi Mele, I have never heard

Hi Mele,
I have never heard of that. Must be some kind of flow device, but in that case using a smaller flame would do the same thing. Where did you hear about this? Interesting....

Mele, I have one, and love

Mele,

I have one, and love it. Try weldingdepot.com for a reasonably priced one that works fine. Remind me after the hurricane and I'll post some pics of a stand I made for mine so it can be foot-pedal operated.

There's the Gentec one that seems to be used by a lot of jewelers (link to a good price seller is on the bottom).

I just recently found out why they're so nice. You get your torch flame set just the way you want and, after working a bit, you need to set the torch down to do something else. Instead of shutting the torch off and then having to relight it and adjust to get the flame you want again you just hang it on the gas saver which shuts off the gases to the torch. When you're ready to work again you pick it, aim it at the pilot light and it turns the gases back on to the same settings you had and lights the torch so you can got back to work...over and over. Seriously cool!

Or, just go to http://www.kingsleynorth.com/ click on Jewelers Tools and type "gas saver" in the search box. Lots of place are selling the same unit for 2-3 times the price.

Heavy Duty

On the Gentec not sure if heavy duty enough to hold a full size torch with a big rose bud tip on it. I have never seen any one mention how it works for heavy duty use. I like the Weldit A101. Good heavy duty and ceramic tip for the pilot lite flame.

Hi Warren, Don't know that

Hi Warren,

Don't know that they're any less heavy duty than the others. The holders on all are about the same. If the torch weighs a ton none may support its full weight so rigging a way to lean it on the "hook" to shut off the fuel may be necessary. Some just drop the hoses on the hook. Some are even using the Gentec to make foot switches.

Some detailed pictures and a thread on the Gentec here:

The gas saver I previously

The gas saver I previously mentioned using is a Gentec. I have it rigged in a stand that allows it to be used in the normal fashion, hanging the torch on it to shut off the gas and oxygen (handles my big Victor torch with cutting head just fine), and also has a foot pedal arrangement where the torch is held in a clamp and the foot pedal opens the gas flow and swings the torch past the pilor light to light the torch. The torch stays on until the pedal is pressed the opposite way to shut it off. This allows me to hold the workpiece and/or filler rod, etc., in two hands and turn the torch on and off with the foot pedal. That makes the whole arrangement much handier in a one-man shop.

I'm still on dial-up for a while yet, but when I get back on broadband I'll post some pictures of the gas saver stand for anyone who wants to copy it.

I have seen a set up like that and it looks really cool. I was going to try and build one for mine. I liked the idea of the gas saver being mounted on its own stand so it is portable as well.
Thanks, Mele
