couple of new jewelry pieces

| |
I assisted a jewelry class at the folk school (John C Campbell, Brasstown NC) last week during which I got to finish a ring and do a pin for a friend - she's having chemo & the slogan is inspired by her husband's t-shirt. The yellow bits are actually gold put on with the kum-boo method, its a lousy pic of the brooch, they just look like brass.  I spend most of my time blacksmithing but also enjoy smaller scale work so this was really fun for me!

Hi Lynda,
That broach is something else.I can't see the detail as well as I'd like, but what I can see is awesome. Both pieces are well executed art. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Frank, Thank you!  I

Hey Frank,

Thank you!  I just looked at the brooch pic and if you click on 'original' under the image it shows the 1000pix wide image that I uploaded which shows the detail better.

I've not done any kum-boo. What did you think of it? Brad

Thanks guys

Making the ring brooch was kind of frenetic and heartfelt, I didn't have a lot of time to plan it - I had thought about mixing up the mokume with other techniques before but didn't think I would like it - but I did.  I feel like I threw caution to the wind with this piece and am really pleased with the result!

I had not done kum-boo before so, as it was being demoed in the class thought I would give it a go.  It was really pretty easy, warm up the silver to about 600F on a hot plate and burnish on the gold foil, raising the fine silver on the sterling was the only tedious bit.  One of the gals in the class had some hole punches with different designs so I used the spiral and then used up the little pieces of the gold foil that had come away with the punch.

The other women in my book group had knitted a wrap as a big hug for Virginia whenever she needed it, so as I don't knit the pin was my contribution.  Making it gave something to me too which was a lovely surprise! I will try and upload a bigger pic, it was a bad, v.hasty photo though.

Bald chicks do rock! It's nice seeing you do some jewelry for a change. How does it feel to swing a small hammer?
