Art Metal Show - Kickoff Meeting Artomatic419

| |

OK, so I'm just gonna come out and say it -
Would you guys officially like to try to do a group art metal display at Artomatic419 show in Toledo, OH coming up last 2 weeks in April and 1st week of May (dates may change slightly)?
This is sponsored by the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo.

I just got approval for this from the Commission. We can reserve a group space. I also suggested we put our work all around the exhibit where it fits, or looks best. We currently have around 180 artists varying from visual to spoken word to musical.

Proposal:
1)Criteria: 8"x8" sheet metal (any gauge/material) Must have some kind of hanging attachment or accommodations for display. Anything goes after that.
2)Theme: ???? Maybe: The Glass City (seeing as we are in Toledo), yes I'm looking for suggestions. This one sucks.
3)Timeframe: Due by March 1st 2009, not much time.
4)Shipping Rqmts: Shipping must be paid both ways (ship it and enclose a check for return shipping)
5)Handling: I will handle receiving/displaying and return shipping.

Of course the web administrators would have to approve or take over-so how 'bout it?
If you guys are game, I think we should register (some how) so I can track the number of artists participating.

I would like to consider myself the facilitator for this event-looking to everyone else for ideas for the creation/criteria. I just suggested 8"x8" for manageability. Remember I have to load off of this in my Lamborgini-ha!

Let me know-I'm ready to go. It's a start. Wouldn't it be great to do this all across the U.S. or abroad in the future?
Administrators-I will wait to hear from you before any further action taken.

OMG! I think I can pull

OMG! I think I can pull this one off!

I have a question though about the glass...does this mean we need to work in a piece of glass or several pieces into the sculpture??? Sorry if it's a dumb question...

I would like to participate!

I think it's a great idea!

Cheers!

I'm in and thanks for this unique opportunity!!!

Thank you for creating this opportunity for the ArtMetal community...just let us know the size limitation would that be 8" in all directions and maybe a little more about the theme...since we are metal workers we will have to translate it into a different media...if this goes through I will write a press blurb for NYC area, anyone with photos of what they are showing can send them to me.....I'll try! Thanks again!

Sounds Good!

Would the piece Have to incorporate glass?

I have a couple of pieces that could go, but they have no glass.

I'm in as well. I also

I'm in as well. I also would like some further info on the glass theme, it sounds intriguing. I guess I'm a bit naive about Toledo and glass(however I am in the know about Klinger from MASH and Toledo, lol), I'm assuming there is a large glass industry there? Also do the pieces have to hang on the wall or could you explain "some method of display"? Sounds like a really fun project, thanks for heading it up Lorrie.

Motivation

Lorri,
Hey what motivation you have? Okay great to see in Toledo, only half hour away and I could hand deliver. Couple of things come to mind, size is very constraining, also you have to remember that hanging stuff is 2D maybe 2.5D at the most and a lot of us work in 3D only. Sheet metal is requiring a medium, should be open.
The glass city theme, okay you want a windshield .

Now I am pretty serious and my time I like to use as best as I can, usually not the best. But anyways what do we get?

I do not know if you have had the time to read this blog.
http://www.artmetal.com/og/metal_books_exhibition
Or know what the final outcome is about but you can see the books at:
http://www.artmetal.com/og/metal_books_exhibition

What happened at the end (hardly anyone knew about it until we showed up at the Shindig with our book), and I must say poor communication about it, is the gallery decided that not their best interest and wanted to charge gallery space somewhere in the neighbor hood of $500. Heck galleries look to make money of what they sell.
Are the items at the one you propose up for sale? Do you have a contract with them to allow this to happen?

I would suggest that you go a little further and see if your gallery is willing to do it for free.
Sorry if I sound negative but been there done that type of thing too many times.

Response to Questions

Thanks for all the great comments and questions.
The criteria can be up to you guys, I just thought keeping it rather small would be easy for me to deliver. I just met with the committee tonight, and they would love some more 3D artists, which we have, but we don't live in the same little hub, so that must be a factor here.

What if we made the requirement: 8"x8"x8" +/-
Material: ahh, some kind of metal
Glass incorporation could be optional, but not req'd.
About Toledo:
Several large glass companies have their origins here. Owens-Illinois, Owens Corning, Libbey Glass, Pilkington North America (formerly Libbey Owens Ford), and Therma-Tru have long been a staple of Toledo's economy. Yes I copied it from Wiki.

No cost for display (I got connections), everything will be accepted, no jurying. This art show is to encourage all to display with no stress, and it's a big hit around here.
Over 14,000 SF so far.

Warren,
The metal book idea is awesome, we could even do that one if everyone is interested. Just keep the comments coming and we will refine it. Is anyone familiar with artist's trading cards? Maybe we could make our own out of metal, only bigger than the typical card size of 2.5"x3.5". These are a blast to do. Do a search on them and see what you find. One of mine ended up in the local paper, The Toledo Blade. Future thoughts, OK-I'm ADD, we could trade them at a later date. This is done in U.S. and some other countries.

Another thought: If we are going to submit together, we might want to call ourselves something other than the Art Metal Forum Geeks. How 'bout Geeks Forum Art Metal? OK-I've been in too many meetings this week.

Warren, not sure about selling the work, I will find out.
Keep the comments/questions coming.

Putting together a group

Putting together a group entry for the show is a good idea, I think. As for what to call the group, that would take a bit of thought. One thing - it would take QuiQue's express permission to use the ArtMetal name, as he has that copyrighted. I suggest you email him directly to get permission, Lorrie. If you're going to use the ArtMetal connection (I think you definitely should), then there should be a small showcard telling about ArtMetal and encouraging people to visit the forum. Remember, it costs money to keep this forum alive and that comes from people coming here and then clicking on Google ads and such. We want to do all we can to keep the forum alive and well, right?

For a name, how about "ArtMetalists"? Let's hear some other ideas, guys.

Is there a provision for hanging works from the ceiling? How about pedestal mounts? I think we need to know more about the physical setup in order to do work to fit the show venue nicely.

Given Enrique's approval to use the ArtMetal aegis, I think this is a really good idea.

I'm with you Rich...I like

I'm with you Rich...I like "ArtMetalists" for the name. My first thought was "MetalArtists," but yours is more unique, and goes better with the site since, one of the ideas here is to promote it.

I'm in! Lorrie, where do we send the sculptures to?

Cheers,

Jamie Santellano

Everything you said is

Everything you said is "right on" Rich. Thank you for your considerations. ArtMetalists is a great name! It would be great to see credit given to the web site by including the ArtMetal name and the url. Including the mission statement on the front page would be fantastic!

As to the exhibition... Purpose, purpose, purpose. Give it a great purpose and you will have a great exhibition. Make the purpose meaningful so the metal artist can create with purpose in mind. Something from the soul would be nice...

Group Name

QuiQue,
Then "ArtMetalists" it is!
QuiQue-Can you handle getting me a word doc or something to represent the group/site? That would be great, I will print up a big display to represent us and the work.
You can sell your work-no commission. I'll handle it, just let me know the price. Customers can write a check to you directly.

Everyone, let's vote on the theme, I see these ideas so far:
1) 8" x 8" x 8" size (any metal, glass optional), can be Glass City themed or not.
2) Metal book (8x8, 8x10) Depth optional, anything goes
3) Metal Artist Trading Card (8 x 10) or smaller. These cards are meant to reflect the artist. To say: this is an example of my work.
4) All of the above??????

As for hanging-yes, we can hang from the ceiling. The ceilings range from 13' to 25'. Please don't make me climb a 25' ladder! To date, the committee does not have any bases for 3D sculptures (as if you were setting it on a display base). If you need this, I will discuss with the logistics committee and see what we can do.

We need to nail the rules by next week so we have enough time to complete the work. If you already have something, great!

I will give you mailing instructions as we near the deadline. Please make sure you insure it.

Thanks,
Lorrie

If this gets off the ground

If this gets off the ground I will send you a higher resolution image of the ArtMetal logo along with the mission statement and url. However, I still have not seen a good purpose or theme for this exhibition. I also am wondering if Nelson has any input on this and whether it conforms to the thread he has going on doing an exhibition. I think the two of you should communicate and see if you are able to work together on this exhibition which should have the backing of community at large.

Quique and Lorrie, My

Quique and Lorrie,
My appologies for not responding earlier, fortunately the sculpture contest replies referred me here to Lorrie`s blogg. Frankly, Lorrie I had read your blogg when you first posted it and from then on I didn`t referred back to it because I felt I couldn`t make it. Anyway, sorry too, I didn`t intend to sort of have a blog race, coming up with a proposal that would compete with your`s or anything like that. No, not at all. Actually, I think both proposals are complementary, and first things should go first. So no double dipping. The opportunity for the Artmetalists to participate in the Toledo exhibition is in my opinion great. Moreover, this opportunity to show some of our work as a group of this site, is in my opinion a chance to get exposure and to promote the image of Art metal, which is ours, the image of each and everyone of us, not bad huh! I would encourage those who are gamed for a sculpture contest, to join Lorrie`s initiative. What else could I say, it’s a wackier idea; namely, a better one, lol. Personally, I`m going to try making it... Nelson.

great job

Lorrie
hey just to take a second for setting up the show in Toledo, now if I can just find a piece that I made that is smaller than 8 inches. That is like a miniature for me. LOL
No actually thank you very much for setting up the show. I will be sending you an email. You know the other day I stopped by my local art council. Talking with them about maybe making a traveling show. I asked if after this show at your place maybe move the stuff to another site and so forth. Make some money by putting the stuff up for bids and tour 10 galleries over a year. They said submit an proposal and they would take it before the committee. Oh well more paperwork.

Traveling Show-eh?

Sounds like a great idea. We need to be thinking about and setting up, prior to the end of this show, if the group is interested. If 8x8x8 is too small, send what you want, but keep in mind your shipping costs-let me know what size your thinking of. No one seemed to like the Artist Trading Card idea, but that would be hte easiest for a traveling show, and I'm sure I could get it in at least one gallery here in Toledo. http://www.space237.com/
