coppersmith Hi I am new to this but I have a commission to make a mad bar. usual tight deadlines its mostly timber but they want a 5" copper nosing to front edge and 2.25" copper nosing to rear edge. rear edge is fairly straight forward as the runs are all straight, however the front is all curved and long runs. Its a big job. I can form the profile but it will need copper sheet forming around I'm not sure how to achieve this and hope one of you can advise or even better... come and do it! Copper Bar

I did a job a few years ago to edge the front of a window ledge, i rolled a section of tube and then cut it in half to get the round edge,if the tube is very thin fill it with sand or a section of wood to stop it collapsing. » reply The drawing says 125mm

The drawing says 125mm radius that's 4.9" or 9.8" dia. To keep that sort of even curve at a large radius like that (either) the ideal tool would be one of the Aussie Motorcycle fender rollers that were discussed on Metalmeet (MM). That is a lot of material to move, and it will have to be done slowly and evenly. You may need to anneal the copper a couple times, but may luck out with once. It is possible to do it by hand but it will take patience. I think you could form a straight channel with a clamp to hold it down and feed it forward over a hammerform with a slightly too small radius and just keep working it down with a slapper. I'd ask Butch over on MM he has hand planished several large kettles back from the edge of the scrap heap. Gene Olson » reply |

Longshot,
Do you have a drawing that shows the radius, this will help in determining how to do?
