commercial art | steel sculpture | wall sculpture Hello all, My name is Kelly Johnston. I've been doing fabricated metal sculpture for about 5 years now, after previously doing graphic and product design. I mainly do abstract contemporary wall art in steel, copper and brass, with emphasis on torch coloring, transparent tints and patinated finishes. I previously designed in the home accessories industry for Artisan House Fine Metal Sculpture and have recently started a wall sculpture line for NOVA Lighting. I like sharing secrets of the craft with fellow artists, but I also like to try to involve more artists in the commercial application of the art, since it can be surprisingly lucrative and satisfying. If any of you are interested in doing commercial work, specifically wall or tabletop sculpture, let me know! You can check out some of my work in the flickr photos below. I'm looking forward to sharing our craft! Thanks ![]() :) back at ya

Welcome to Artmetal Kelly, just looked through your picts and you have some pretty impressive pieces. Is your commercial work all one-offs or do you create a design or line and re-produce it for a while? Some of your pieces have stunning colors, I'd love to hear how those were accomplished. Jake ![]() Hi Kelly....and Welcome

Hi Jake. Thanks for the welcome and comment! My commercial pieces are reproduced by a partner manufacturer and I receive royalties based on sales. As far as color is concerned, there are two ways I accomplish the vivid, transparent colors using the airbrush: 1) using Universal Tints within a water-based clear coat or lacquer base and 2) Using Sculpt Nouveau solvent dyes. Both require multiple layers of application and color layering to achieve the results. The solvent dyes are pricey for large pieces, but they are far more saturated and transparent than using the tint+lacquer method. ![]() welcome to Artmetal,

You do some beautiful professional looking metal art Kelly! I'm sure we could all use some advice on metal coloring and those beautiful trasparent tints you are using. I hope that in turn, we can help answer any questions you may have in the metal arts. Welcome to ArtMetal! ![]() Your Pieces..

I actually want to dabble more with found art -- as I love the discovery process...and sometimes I just want to get away from the "clean" look. I'm going to check out your work right now! This seems like a great site. |
