Can you remove galvanizing?

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if heating (over a flame) galvanized steel mesh will remove the galvanizing? Will it remove it the first time or will it release the fumes on subsequent re-heating? I am aware that the fumes are toxic so I am doing this outside away from anyone that could inhale the fumes.

Hi Jon, Yes, if you heat it

Hi Jon,
Yes, if you heat it hot enough, you'll burn off the zinc galvanizing. It will produce a thick sweet smelling white smoke and might leave a powdery residue on the screen. It will do this every time you heat it up until all of the galvanizing is burned off. Did you want to burn it off or are you trying not to burn it off?

Thank you

Thank you very much for the help. I do want to burn it off. Again thank you.

Be Careful

Yes galvanizing can be removed. Not easily. Heating galvanizing can result in deadly fumes and is very dangerous. Please be careful. I really don't want to read about another person dieing from this. Once is enough in my book.
You may also find that if the mesh is fine at all, the galvanizing may be a major part of the wire diameter. Leaving you with almost nothing when finished.

Please don't heat it!

You can remove the zinc coating by soaking over night in vinegar or in an hour or using muriatic acid. please wear gloves, goggles, and always add the acid to water NOT the other way round.

It will start rusting very quickly after it is rinsed with clean water. I hope this helps.

BTW, if you heat it, don't get the residue in an open cut or sore. I did, I didn't like it.

Rusting

If you use vinegar or acid to remove it, you can neutralize it with water and, as Rick stated, it will rust quickly. However, if you use HOT water, the water will evaporate before it flash rusts. I did this on some files and used muratic acid to clean and sharpen them. Rinsed in cold water and they flash rusted. I need to do them again and rinse in hot water.

Thank you all

Jon Harty: thank you all for the advice. I think that I will be able to use both methods. You all are great.
