Actually, yes. I will be at Gichner's this next weekend, though it's a bit of a reach for me. (grin)

I pre-registered, so I saved fifteen bucks, but that's insignificant in the overall value of the occasion. I'm sure it will be a grand time, and I'll get to see a number of my Stateside friends that I only see at such events.

After Gichner's, I'm going to run down and visit my brother in NC and stop in and pay a visit to the Webminster himself. I'm looking forward to that. Should be a good trip all around, if I don't freeze half to death.

I used to go to the old

I used to go to the old Gichener gathering when they did the demonstrations in the basement.
This new place is supposed to have a "heated" barn. I wonder how that will turn out...

I sincerely hope it will

I sincerely hope it will turnout warm! My tropicalized thin blood won't handle those bitter cold sessions standing around outside anymore.

The guys who have been to the last couple in the new location say it is warm and comfy at the demos, but the tailgating is outside in an area that is a virtual wind tunnel. I can't bring a bunch of stuff home anyway, so I guess a quick flyby will be all I do on the goodies. (grin)

Gichners

Rich, ya better brake out the mukluks and a big down parka buddy.
That or stay in the barn.

I am sure you will see something that will have to be crated up for the trip out to the island.

Should be much warmer in NC.
Warmer than New Hampshire in February.

Wish I was going to be there too.

You got that right, driver!

You got that right, driver! I 'boutg froze to death last February, as you know. You guys had way too much fun at my expense on that trip. (grin)

With the TIG unit, the vise from QS, and whatever other bits Steve picked up for me at the ceramics plant, that crate is probably going to be maxxed out. But, we'll see. Ya just never know what will pop up, do you?

Wish you could make it out there, but I know it's along jaunt for you, Steve. Glad Ralph's making it, though.

Jim-
This is the first I heard of this event. I will most likely go to this since this is (relatively) close to where I live. I have some conflicts with the weekend, but I will try to do it.

I'm with Janet, how does one

I'm with Janet, how does one go about finding these Hammerins? Does any body know about one in the midwest, close to Nebraska? They sound like fun and a great learning experience.

Jake,There's a big

Jake,

There's a big gathering right there in Nebraska, the same weekend as Gichner's, I believe. It's supposed to be the 100th anniversary of Little Giant power hammers or some such, and will be held at Harlan "Sid" Suidmeier's place. Do a Google search for Little Giant Power Hammers and you should find it. Or maybe check at www.anvilfire.com or at www.forgemagic.com for more info.

For those in the Midwest, the bar-none best Hammer-In is the Southern Ohio Forge and Anvil (SOFA) annual QuadState gathering in Troy, OH the last full weekend of September every year. I travel a few thousand miles every year for that one. If I'm not at it, check the hospital. (grin)

A good starting point is the ABANA site. http://www.abana.org/index.shtml
You'll find a listing of blacksmith groups across North America and sometimes the get-togethers are listed. I just did a quick look at the site and found the Neb. groups web site: http://pba.abana-chapter.com/

There also going to be a huge event in Sedalia Missouri that is supposed to be bigger than the Abana conference which is supposedly on hold until they get their finances figured out???

Hammer-ins/Conferences

Rich, you never know whats going to be there that you will have to find room in the crate for. Hope ya don't freeze to death.

I plan to be at the Sedalia Mo conf.

Should be a good one.

Like Rich said about the Quadstate roundup.
If you want to go to the best conference bar none then go to this one. Its the Woodstock of blacksmith conferences.
There are so many things to see and so much stuff for sale it will blow your mind. If your looking for something chances are you may find it there. Get there a day early though if you want to find the deals. There are people there that just wait for the next truck to pull in. They will follow you till you stop and park. Then they are asking what you have for sale.
I have been going to this conf since 87. Its has grown so much since then. The SOFA folks do a outstanding job of putting it on.
In the evenings folks set around and yak and drink the liquid of their choice. Its a great time to renew friendships and get your batteries recharged. You will see work in the gallery that will amaze you. Its all a very inspiring event.

I have a shop in Lincoln,

I have a shop in Lincoln, NE. I come up to KC every couple of months to visit friends, I might have to arrange a trip to attend one of the meetings. Is there a Calender of these Missouri events online? Would they be on that Appalacian Blacksmith site? Our friends keep trying to get us to move to KC. They make it sound like if we move up there the door to Metalworking riches will just open up and give me it's treasures. I think they're just bored and lonely.
