trying to get over

hey everybody

sorry i haven't been around, i've been chasing the dollar. the job front is still crap, interviews getting cancelled and nobody calls you back and what not. the good news is i got some of my work in a new high end home decor gallery here in town and i'm working on getting a show in the trendy coffee house gallery where all the cool kids hang out. think graffiti and angst over dark roasted arabica and a six dollar pack of smokes.

hey teachers i need a little help

i'm about to begin the start-up of a metal sculpture workshop for a small class of high school students(6). the group is made up of juniors and seniors who are part of a 3-d art class. now besides all the obvious stuff about safety is there anything special that i need to know about that may act as a hindrance? the center offers shop classes in the same building(it's a career center or what we used to call the vocational technology center) and the plan is to conduct it like shop class using all of their safety guidelines with both the shop teacher and the art teacher involved. there will be welding with mig and grinding and cutting, but no torches or open flame. right now we're at the first hurdle of getting permission. has anyone ever done this before and can offer insight into what to expect and what to avoid?

a technical question about arc welders

i need to build an adapter so i can use the 220 socket for our dryer to power the little red lincoln. it requires a 30 amp push just like the dryer and besides the shape of the plug i don't think there's any real difference. i was thinking that i could just pick up a replacement dryer cord (10 gauge/30 amp) and attach a socket that will fit the lincoln but i wanted to see if anyone had a better suggestion or if my idea has a flaw i'm not aware of.

hey everybody

just got back a few days ago from the honeymoon from hell! we're still crazy about each other, but i'll just say that the trip was terrible. we stayed at one of those all-inclusive resorts down in jamaica and the brochures and website all told big big lies about what we were supposed to be getting. i'm not going to come out and say exactly which company this was for the sake of staying out of legal trouble so let's call them "flip-flops" at "eight rivers".

stupid injuries

so we've all done something stupid in the shop or studio that has resulted in an injury. over at the john merrick post we've been discussing the fun ways a cup brush on a grinder can cause greivous bodily harm and i thought we should have a discussion of cautionary tales about things you shouldn't do while working with metal.
