Clear coat | finishes | mild steel I am looking for suggestions on perserving mild steel so it will not rust, but with a clear coat finish. I use a welder to draw on sheet metal, then I use torches, grinders, and polishing wheels to creat colour and texture to the drawing. I have been using a spray of automotive clear coat to protect the finish work from rusting, but I am looking for other ideas, I am not sure how long the spray will protect the art. any suggestions appreciated ![]() sealing steel work

James, I use Permalac products. Works well. sprays or brush on like water. It is pricey but a gallon would last you a long long long time. George ![]() James, I use a product

hi James, this subject has come up a lot with bunches of different suggestions. If the piece is going to be inside, i think you have a lot wider variety of options, if it's going outside, well, research and trial and error will be your answer. I have hear good things about Paula's suggestion and also with Permalac, which supposedly was developed specifically for raw steel. Marine varnishes and clears have also been suggested, but be sure to color test them first, some of them can turn amber. Hope this helps Im sure we'd all love to see some picts of your work, I'm intrigued now. Jake Balcom |
