Aluminum Bronze

Casting |

I've been toying with making small quantities of bronze just for fun. Tin in raw form has been challenging to find, although I think I tracked down a supplier for small quantities. I have had no luck whatsoever finding elemental silicon in sufficient quantity at a reasonable cost. I did read some interesting articles on properties of aluminum bronze, and have tried a couple of tests there, (see below) and have a good supply of clean/pure copper in cable form that's easy to chop up to size for the (A6 graphite/clay) crucible I'm using. The furnace is propane fired.

Annealing a clay/graphite crucible

Casting

I have a new A6 clay/graphite crucible to replace the welded steel pipe one I've been using in my Gingery style blast furnace for the past couple of years. I also recently constructed a propane burner for the furnace to make tuning the temperature a little easier than with charcoal, as well as to leave more space to work in the furnace. Can someone share with me their procedure for initial anealing of such a crucible? I'd hate to crack it on the first try!

Small forge construction

|

I'm planning construction of a small forge with a friend inspired by this one

http://ronreil.abana.org/minifor1.shtml

by Ron Riel. In researching Kaowool, I can't find a source for all the technical specs I want. For instance, what is the practical difference between #6 density and #8 density? I've ordered some ITC 100 for another project and plan on using it to treat the Kaowool inside this forge as well, but I've seen reference to needing something like ITC 200 to coat the "wool" first to toughen it up ...others make no mention of any need for such. Can anyone point me to a good source of info on these questions?
