Corten and albert paley

Site Help - FAQ

I noticed the recent blog regarding corten wall cladding in someone’s house.

I am interested in info regarding corten. I live in Australia and we don’t have this material. From what I understand it is a weathering steel.

Is anyone familiar with Bissaloy or Welten? Is it a similar product? Does it have a mild steel look to it when it is polished or is it more like a SS finish?

For those of you who are familiar with Albert paley's work I am particularly curious to discover what material the bronze looking metal is that he uses in the gates pictured on the front cover of his book “Sculpture, Drawings, Graphics and Decorative Arts”. It looks like a hard metal and not soft like brass.

Glen

Paley gates

Albert used steel, brass. bronze and copper in the gates he made for the Renwick Gallery. He has used brass and bronze in several of the pieces he has made over the years.

Corten and such

Hi Glen

First up....Albert Paley. I made a trip to the Renwick Gallery specially to see those gates....fantastic. I've just had a look at the dust jacket for "The Art of Albert Paley". The gates are featured on the cover.... It says "forged and fabricated steel, brass, bronze and copper."

Corten is available in Australia...its just hard to find. BHP requires a minimum order of 1000 tonnes (last time I checked) to produce it. Your best bet is to find someone producing a large industrial job in Corten and buy a few of their off-cuts. The tree-top walk in Kings Park is Corten....as I believe are a number of sculptures along the Roe Highway

If you find a supplier and need to order a lot to be taken seriously, let me know....I am also keen to give it a go.

Good luck

Peter
