Every now and again an old friend pops up from the past ...these two images are on flickr ...I have written to the photographer in the hope that he will have more ..anyway, I thought you might like to see something I made about 25 years ago ...rare in that it still stands where I made it for .....it is one of a pair of ambos (pulpits) which I made for Chelmsford Cathedral ...One piece of 1/2 inch etched and hammered plate with the handrail curved over and covered with brazing rods ...I lined the inside with leather and treads of Ewe ...the lectern is from walnut rootamboamboambo insideambo insideambo frontambo frontambos togetherambos togetherambo-surfaceambo-surfaceambo surfaceambo surface

Timeless

Giusseppe,
Twenty five years, two hundred thousand years...it doesn't matter. Art and architecture that inspires man to dwell on his creator is timeless. It will surely turn to dust, yet continue.
Peace,eh?
Frank

Giusseppe- Your work never

Giusseppe-
Your work never ceases to amaze me! This is a wonderful piece. The design really fits so nicely into the environment there. I am impressed with the 1/2" steel plate (bullet proof...?) that you worked. I can't even imaging how you formed that shape.

forming

Oh, the curving was easy ... I went to a place with big rollers and they helped me
The hard bit was free forging the edge to get the handrail ... I remember making a huge stake in the floor and suspending the plate from a crane and forging with a 14 pound sledge ... it was the day the bishop came to watch so it made for good theatre ...

What you cannot see that well is the surface ... I wanted it to look forged without obviouse hammer marks so I used a stiff brush with stopout and etched a fuller like texture into the plate before rolling ...we had to commission a custom built polyprepolene bath 10 ft by 6 ft x 2 feet deep for the acid. I wish I still had that but it never made one of my moves ...
I think I still have another plate that I etched at that time ...I will post a picture if I find it

Anyway ...this flickr thing has sent me on a quest for other old work that would probably never come up under my name but someone might have pictures tagged with the location name ...here is another site ( Cardiff University ) where I see they have re positioned my gates and put themcardiff universitycardiff university in a yucky box frame ...

Great work Guisseppe, it's nice to see that a piece you created still stands as intended 25 yrs later. They look great in their setting.
