I love wattle

|

here is a wattle theme that I used throughout a village in Germany
This village is typical of the area in that it has grown out of reclaimed land from the sea.Over hundreds of years houses were built upon the remains of old ones, so the present settlement is on a bump in the otherwise flat landscape.
When digging the foundations for a new building the old wattle was exposed several feet down ....this was the inspiration for the fencing.wattle1wattle1wattle2wattle2wattle3wattle3

The construction of this

The construction of this fence interests me, as well as the loveleyness (sp?) of it. It appears to have another line behind the fence in the pic wattle2. Maybe this is only a shadow? Can we see some closer pictures? I might try something like this at home. It is very interesting.

closer

I cannot find a closer detail but here is the same thing done on a gate in Oxford.
In Germany there is an inverted vertical L shape stiffening bar which wraps around the joining bar between two panels .. there are loops at the end of each panel which interlock and are held by a vertical bar passing through.wattle gatewattle gatewattle detailwattle detailwattle detail2wattle detail2

This is quite interesting. I keep looking at it and trying to make it in my mind. Kinda hard to get my tired old brain wrapped around it.

I still like and maybe I'll give a small version a try one day.

simple to do

all you do is make a series of matching horizontals then slide them up the verticals (two end verticals first)..grease the bars with something soluble if you want a tight fit without welds. Do not push horizontals together until all are in place.
a bonus in this structure is that it shifts to follow a slope and can be bent into curved panels by placing on timbers and jumping up and down.
have fun
