Casting shell casting I have read some archived information on building fluidized beds, but have not been successful in finding actual designs...some of the post refer to designs, but I have not seen them. Are those archived, or does anyone have a design concept that they can share. fluidized bed

Great, hope to hear from you about the design, I am looking forward to constructing one of them soon. George

I was wondering the same thing. I am new to the site, but have found a lot of information thus far. The size I am looking to build is a small scale around 12"x12". » reply Klantz, That is much smaller

Klantz, That is much smaller that what I need. I would think a small squirrel cage blower piped into a wooden box or small bucket would work. Try using a layer or two of an old shirt as the plenum - that should support that small amount of sand needed in a bed of that size. My issue is that I am in need of constructing a commercial sized unit. Sized to my investment slurry tank which is 48 inches in diameter. Right now the slurry tank is much larger than the works that I can cast, for two main reasons...one is stucco application ( a bed would solve that) and my burnout kiln. It is going to be rebuilt too. Here is a link to see some of what I have been doing, you can see the slurry tank in the 7 min video. I built the the mixer too. http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1648339910&ref=name#/video/video.php?v=60333657533&oid=58266467968 KeystoneArt.org » reply I had thought of old tshirt,

I had thought of old tshirt, but what I think I'm going to use is some ceramics sifters, I think anything above about 200 mesh should be good and it will be much more durable. For yours, Could you make the plenum out of say re enforced peg board with the holes covered with the same kind of mesh? The holes would be evenly spaced and as long as you had access to the underside, you could block as many holes as it would be necessary to get the right amount of pressure throughout the bed. » reply |

fluidized bed construction
George. I made one years ago out of a plastic barrel. I did post info on it's construction years ago on this site but it may not be there. The most expensive thing on the unit was a 1/2" ball valve, total cost was under $100 and it works great. I will post more on it in the next day or 2 but right now I have to get ready to go Dungeness Crab fishing.
