Our local art show was pretty successful. Mostly local residents from our small town though.I donated a piece called "Eight Sides" for a silent auction to raise money for our local art group. I sold"Cowichan Warrior" a wall hanging sculpture of a Northwest Native American. The sculpture will join a collection of masks from around the world, so I'm honored.I got an invite to another art show sponsored by a Harley Davidson bike club chapter in da UP. I actually think this will be a better venue for my style of artwork. Might have a commission, for a chiropractor,to make a sculpture of a spine. All in all, it was a good day.I need to start a small business, any suggestions for guide books for an idiot? ![]() I'll Take Look

Hi Frank, Congratulations on your show. Sounds like you got some great responses. With regards to info about small business startup, you might try a book called "Small Time Operator"(can't think of the author) which is a basic book on starting a small business of any type. Not extremely detailed, but it was a good book for me to start with. You also might look into a book called "Markup and Profit: A contractors guide" by Michael Stone. It is more oriented towards people that make, install, or repair things. It is oriented a little more towards the building contractors, but all of the same principles apply to those of us with shops. You just have to use a little brain power and rearrange some of the percentages a little. It goes into detail about most of the problems we would encounter in a way that is to the point. It showed me where my shop was hemorrhaging money within 5 chapters and pretty much turned my business around. I've still got a lot to work on, but these books have helped quite a bit. Don't have much experience with copyright stuff, but would love to learn more about it if you come across in info. Jake ![]() Small time... that's me

Instead of a book, you might also want to look into taking an evening class. When I first started creating artwork, I took some Marketing your Crafts classes. It was really helpful, as I could ask questions specifically pertaining to my needs. Times change, so while there are great older books which are wonderful for the 'concepts' of small business, you want to make sure the books or information you get for specifics are current. Also remember that you can Google a whole library of information. I do not recommend buying any book that is older than 6 months for learning about the internet and business. At least not without checking their reviews to see if the information is still valid. A year is ancient history online. Alex ![]() Class
