Installed Railing

Ironwork | railing | steel Hi All, just finished installing a railing I've been working on and thought I'd post some picts. The client had wanted a modern design that involved traditional looking elements and this is what I came up with. I also tried a new concept for posts at the front and corner of the larger railing, something a little more interesting and lighter looking than a boxy square tube that was decorated with this or that. I would like to come up with a more interesting way to finish the bottom of the posts, but other than that the technique worked pretty well. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. The last pict is a little better view of the staggered pickets. ![]() This is a nice clean design.

This is a nice clean design. It makes me think of groin vaulting in the old cathedrals. marilyn ![]() Thanks Marilyn, I've been

Thanks Marilyn, I've been wondering where I'd seen the concept and have gotten a lot of example images on the Sandbox. The last couple were of vaulted ceilings of old churches. Jake Jake Balcom ![]() Hi Jake, Frankly, I`m trying

Thanks Nelson, I may just be acting too critical. I guess sometimes I work or look at something for so long, every little detail becomes an issue. It's nice to have outside opinions from very talented peers. Keeps me on track. Jake Balcom ![]() Hi Jake, Man, I don't know

Hi Jake, You know, I'm not big on Railings but after watching your work I have really come to appreciate the talent of your designs. For me it's about flow and you always seem to Nail that concept. AWESOME!! Chuck ![]() Sometimes an artist is

Sometimes an artist is hardest on themselves. Any "feature creep" may distract from the oringinal design and increase your costs. In other words, don't add features the customer wont't pay for. Your work looks great and I would be proud to own some of it. Don ![]() Wow, what a nice thing to

Wow, what a nice thing to hear. Thanks Don. I agree with you about the artist being the toughest critic. Even worse, it's dangerously easy to want to add things to satisfy your own criticism. Like I said above, I'm glad I've got smart talented peers to weigh in and evaluate my work with fresh eyes. Thanks again. Jake Balcom ![]() Thanks Chuck, I think if I

Thanks Chuck, I think if I had my choice I'd rather do sculptures all day, but for me the railings pay the bills right now. I find designing them and building them enjoyable. It's dealing with unknown surprises that pop up behind the drywall or in the floor of a remodel job that I can do without, lol. Jake Balcom ![]() Railing design

Perhaps your name should be Gothicus Maximus! Wonderful work; clean symmetrical and with those illusive "Invisible welds". Nic East, Jim Thorpe, PA USA ![]() Thanks Nic, I can be a bit

Thanks Nic, I can be a bit of symmetry nut which has its positive and negative side effects. In this case it was a plus. As for the welds, you can kind of blame Janet for that. During my trip to NYC and my wonderful chat with Janet I couldn't help but admire the clean polished welds on her work. I don't think it's necessary on all projects, but with some it's the icing on the cake. Jake Jake Balcom ![]() Thanks Peter Jake

Thanks Frank, it's a fine line knowing when to stop adding or taking away elements of a design. With this one, the client helped a lot with her input. Jake Balcom ![]() great design and exicution

Thanks Jay, I got the cap rail at Kings Architectural Metals like Rick did. It's pretty heavy duty, 2-1/4" wide by 5/8" thick with I nice modern profile, roughly 3/8" chamfers on the top two corners. Material came to me pretty clean, but there was a slight bow in one of them, the hard way of course, which I couldn't get out. That was a bit of a bummer for me, but with your big ol' tools you could probably straighten it right out. Also comes in 8' sections which means it can be shipped UPS.
