Rose Garden Panels

| | |

Hi All, I finished one of the two decorative rose garden panels yesterday. Should finish the other one and the posts this weekend then off to the powder coaters. They go with 10 more non decorated panels and are for the new Lincoln city rose garden here. The panels are 5'H x 7'L and weigh about 500lbs(275lbs for the non-decorated ones). This is the biggest project I've worked on and I am happy to on the final stretch. It should also provide me with a lot of exposure which I am excited about.

Color

Hi Jake,
That panel looks very attractive.Just wondering what color you'll be making them.Is there specific powder coating material for out doors? Nice work, Jake.

Thanks Frank, they'll be

Thanks Frank, they'll be coated black. The outdoor powder has UV protectors in it, the powder without will breakdown much quicker and is mostly used indoors(you can top coat with a clear UV Powder though). I'll post picts after the install.

Thanks Bill, I agree with

Thanks Bill, I agree with you about a little contrast for the roses. The powers that be in this project were pretty conservative with the finish. The idea of maintenance or the fact that it might have to be reapplied didn't sit we'll with them. Vandalism was a big concern, which is why it's built for bear(each rose weighs about 10lbs). Have you ever dealt with this hesitancy over a nicer finish and what was your suggestion?

Jake- Wonderful work. That

Jake-
Wonderful work. That makes me want to make a trip up north just to see these. The roses are a great design. I agree with Bill, though. All your wonderful tallent in design and execution will not be appreciated fully (except by those of us that really admire your work) if they are painted black. What would happen if you just added a little of the GP highlights over the powder coat just to bring out your roses a little. Would they even realize, other than to notice how wonderful the whole thing looks? That may be an idoit's suggestion, but, hey, I'm a novice. What do I know?

Hi Jake

been too busy for commenting, only quickly scanning.
Your roses are beautiful...truely your own interpertation .
very art nuevo.... I'm impressed with how productive you are.
Finally finshed the last of my commission but had a problem with the glass insets! I'll post all about it tomorrow.
I'm in recuperation. Congratulations Jake! Janet R.

Thanks Janet, your hard work

Thanks Janet, your hard work is paying off though, your railing project looks amazing. It will be great to see it with sunlight streaming through the glass pieces.

Thanks Rob, You may have to

Thanks Rob, You may have to drive a long way if your going to head north to see the rails, I think I'm straight west of you, Lincoln, Nebraska. I think i might take you up on your advice about the gilders paste. I'm going to order some and play with it to see how it works, I was thinking about "germen silver"(has a gold hue) or plain silver for the highlights, any idea? Do you, Bill, or Lynda have much experience with Gilders paste and if so, can you give me some pointers?

That's a beautiful panel.

That's a beautiful panel.  The roses are lovely, they remind me of the Glasgow art nouveau Mackintosh roses.  I personally prefer flowers stylised like this over the realistic ones.

Getting samples done has been very useful for us in talking about finishes and making decisions.  For the client, I think there's nothing quite like being able to actually see what the heck the artist is talking about!

Will you wire brush it before it goes to powder coating?  Might be worth setting up a presentation type shot if it looks nice without the powder coat.

Thanks Lynda, I wire brushed

Thanks Lynda, I wire brushed the sample vine I showed them. They like it a lot, but again it was the maintenance ordeal that brings everyone back to powder coat. Almost all of my rails/fences come apart fairly easily, making it more economical to have them re-coated in 7-10 years than maintained every year with a more delicate finish. It's especially true in reference to surprises like vandalism. As of yet it seems that it's easier to get a nicer finish on a residential project than a public one, and inside rather than outside, but I'm still learning and researching. I like the idea of the Gilders paste and am going to fool around with that a bit.

Jake, The panel is great

Jake,

The panel is great and I think the execution of the roses are very classy. Linda is right. they are very Glasgow, Arts & Crafts Movement, Mackintosh style. I ahve an embroidered table runner with these roses on them. I will obviously trying these in copper for our home. My wife will love them.
