soldering | torch Hi all, This is a great site! I have been having difficulty soldering relatively large pieces of metal together (two different projects: 6" x 4" piece of copper into a cylinder and two 1.5" x 6" pieces of brass together. I have a fairly old propylene torch (not sure of the make) and I have noticed the rubber hose that connects it to the tank is slightly cracked. At any rate even getting easy solder to flow is extremely difficult. I am using flux intended for jewelry from Rio Grande (sorry can't remember the name exactly.) Is the torch leaking likely my problem? Or is more the large size of my projects? Thanks so much for any input! Emily |

I'm not familar with what a propylene torch might be. Do you mean a propane torch? You are probably not getting the metal hot enough to solder. I use an acetylene air torch. I would also suggest that you use white paste flux. It doesn't break down as quickly as the yellow liquid meant for small jewelry projects. You can buy it at places that sell welding supplies. Be sure that your fit is exect. Silver solder is more like crazy glue than school paste. It will run as thin as water so there really can not be any gaps.
