New Guy On The Block

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to introduce myself to the group. I am very new to the metal arts but fell in love with copper and working with it while pursuing my part time hobby of making custom tabletop fountains. I have been a professional lurker for a while to learn different techniques that I needed in my fountain building.

I am very interested in raising and repousse, as these techniques would assist in my hobby as well as providing a new avenue of expression. I will be attending an upcoming 3-day class in Kentucky in March to learn a bit about making copper vases. If all goes well, I'll share with you some of my work. I am amazed at what you all do and I appreciate this site.

Hi EAustin,

I just took a look at your website and really like your fountains. The step by step images were great. I too love the sound of running water, but have not had the opportunity to work on many fountains, especially with the character that your's seem to have. The one's I did get to build were plain stainless steel wall fountains. Nice and clean but not many places for the water to run over and make that wonderful sound. Nice work and welcome to Artmetal.

Kind Words

Jake,
Thanks for the kind words about my fountains! I post them one at a time as I get them done so the site changes a lot. I really enjoy working with the old copper but am excited at the prospect of raising the vessels myself. The work I see on this site by everyone really amazes me and I'm glad to have found this group.
Thanks Again,
Eric

The vessels

Eric,
I finally got around and checked out your website. Boy I really really liked some of the vessels that you have. The making of the fountain was interesting and nice fountain.
You mentioned you are going to take a class on raising, good for you. Raising is a great technique of forming metal. Raising is a lot of grunt work and once you learn you will be surprised what you can make. I think your prices of your fountains will go up in price dramatically.

Thanks Warren, I love the old copper from the Arts and Crafts Era! I collect many old pieces and have some nice Roycroft vessels too. But I'll never think of making a fountain out of a Roycroft piece. My class is in March and if I don't totally screw up I'll post my progress.

Yeah those were are the days I like

Yeah I am also big fan of Arts and Crafts Era. I once did a stretch of making Mission Style furniture. But wasn't my thing. Hey if you go to my website I have a tutorial on raising. Might help or might mess you up. Three days in a row class is a lot of hammering.
