Aloha from Maui

| |

Hi all.
I've been admiring the work I see here, and I thought it was time I jump in and share.

I live in Hawaii, Maui to be exact, and I'm a metal fabricator/artist. Most of my work has been for a four star restaurant here on the north shore.
I work in mostly stainless steel and copper with MIG and gas welding. I have MIG, TIG, and gas welding setups, a plasma cutter and the usual grinders and chopsaws.

I was recently laid off from my day job, so now this is becoming a full time gig for me. There are lots of homes here with lots of money behind them and they all want gates! In fact, they all want the COOLEST gate! That's where I come in...

This is a Flickr link to a gallery of pictures of a gate I'm currently working on.

It's constructed of 1.5" stainless square tube and copper over wood. The latch will be fabricated today. It will be a comet with a tail.
I'll update the link as it progress. I plan to install this gate tomrrow.

Here's a little more of my work:

Looking forward to more work and opportunities to let my imagination go wild!

Hi Dino and welcome to

Hi Dino and welcome to Artmetal. I like the gate a lot, nice use of the grinder to create the clouds. Is the green at the bottom a paint or patina of some sort?

Patina on copper

I used a solution of sulphuric acid. It's made just for producing a green patina on copper.
I applied it with a brush using light strokes. After it evaporates it forms copper sulfate which is the green color you see. It only takes about 30 minutes for the whole process. I'll apply Boiled Linseed Oil to the copper to preserve the look. The Linseed Oil will harden and seal it from the elements.

Do you do metal casting? I have some projects I'm working on and I'm looking for someone on the island to work with. I'm an interior designer and am mostly working on small decorative elements.
