Cool Little Tool: Panavise

Jewelry |

I just got this great little tool that is promising to be very handy, so I thought I'd share. You can get all sorts of expensive GRS stuff on Rio Grande - which is really great stuff - but you can't beat the price of this little Panavise. I got mine on Amazon for $25.

I just opened the box and fiddled around with it for a bit. It's really solid, locks down tight - no wiggling. Nice and small too, the replaceable, plastic jaws are 2.5 inches across. I'm going to bolt it to a big, thick slab of aluminum that I have. Should make a great little workstation. I'm planning on using it for stone setting. We'll see what happens.

I've had one for over ten

I've had one for over ten years and yes they are handy. Mine is mounted on an aluminum plate as you suggested. It makes the vise more movable. Mine has metal jaws so I can weld copper pieces at odd angles. Some larger pieces require a little extra tighening, but slippage is not normally a problem.

Last night I glued heavy

Last night I glued heavy rubber pads to the jaws from a scrap I had. Perfect. It holds rings VERY firmly, no slippage, no damage.

Vice for setting

Learn to use a ring clamp for setting rings.I find the wooden one works better than the plastic ones as they do not bend and allow your piece to slip out.Wedge it against your bench peg for extra support.Or use some shellac on a piece of wood i.e piece of wooden broom handle.

Most of the stone setting

Most of the stone setting work I have done has been with a ring clamp. I have had a wooden one for years and recently got the metal GRS one. It's nice.

Funny though, after discovering this little Panavise, I keep noticing it in the background of other people's jewelry how-to photos and videos, on Ganoksin, in books, all over the place. A little piece of T-stock (extruded aluminum) in the jaws and there is a great shellac "stick".

Panavise

LOL I love my panavise. I have 3 different sets of jaws for it(metal, rubber faced, wood/metal, it'll hold almost anything and I found it at a garage sale for $3
