Welding Kevin | sculpture | welder Hello, my name is Crosby! and I’m a metal sculptor gonnabee in Phoenix, Arizona. Been thinking about it for a while and, thanks to the generous help of His Lordship Kevin*, I'm finally taking actions toward learning to weld something besides coupons. Nothing to show yet as I'm just learning to light the very new to me oxyacetylene torch and will be dusting off my small MIG shortly, too. I like this forum. Mostly what I've been doing is refreshing the front page to see random samples of the work of the members. Some darn talented people here. I'm very impressed and inspired by not only the work but the variety of things people do. Really opened my eyes to the possibilities. More to come, I promise!
*that's what he makes me call him as I straighten his rob and polish his scepter. (That's what you get for outting me, Kevin.) ![]() welcome Crosby!!!

Hi, Just mentioned this afternoon that I've seen and really like your work. Dusted the MIG off today. Kevin did better with it than I did. Discovered my never attached C25 wasn't filled like it was supposed to be so the playing was short lived. I'll play with it a bit and see if I can't get the kind of results I did with flux core wire or I may switch back. There's something about oxyacetylene I like though. Maybe it's the newness. And I can't get the darn Henrob torches out of my mind. As I said in the reply to Kevin, I have a cardboard marquette to assemble and I'll post that once it's done. Thanks for replying! I'm new to the site as well. I'm still having trouble posting pictures of my work and that seems to be the key to acceptance or "respect" as the late greats AF and RD would say. I'm old school computer illerate and spend most of my pc time in the help box! I generaly get frustrated and head for the shop. I do found metal objects mostly and use a Hobart 140 with flux cored wire. I find it very messy requiring alot of clean up on the welds. I'm considering switching to gas as I used a friends recently and really liked it. Here's my confusion, I had to run a 100' line to my shop from my apt to provide power. My Hobart uses a 110 and does alot of sputtering and poping but seems to get enough penatration. My friend uses a 220 with gas and his welds are beautiful. I speculate I'm not getting prime preformance because of not enough juice. What say you Mr.gonabe? ![]() Hi, welcome to the forum. I

Hi, welcome to the forum. I watched a video on how to post, load pictures that's in the help/faq section link is in the top right of the screen. Wrong person to ask welding questions of as I'm still a "gonnabee" not an "is already" :-) However, I suspect you're right about the power with the 100' line, depending on the line. Sputtering and popping could be dirty metal (flux is less picky), wire speed, stickout, distance of the gun to the work, bad ground (maybe clamp directly to the work and see), and assorted other things someone else will need to chime in about. I liked flux core. Didn't mind the cleaning with a grinder and braided wire wheel. No one I knew that welded did so I was talked into gas. Flux was easier. I'll learn. :-) ![]() Missed a spot

Sorry Your Lordship. I'll re-polish at once! :-) Then, I'll get to putting together the cardboard marquette and see how it looks. Maybe I'll post that so there's something here -- that will MAKE me have to complete it, too. Thanks again for the help!
